The story
Central Scotland · 2024
Children do not need apparatus. They need slope, water, loose material and permission.
The design provides a shallow rill fed from a rainwater store, felled oak from a nearby estate, boulders sized to be climbed at four and sat on at fourteen, and a willow tunnel that changes every year.
Risk is present, deliberate and proportionate. It is the reason the space is still interesting in the third year.

Consultation
Sessions with children, parents, teachers and support staff before design began.

Graded challenge, clear sightlines for supervision, wheelchair access to every zone.

Build
Locally sourced timber and stone, installed with the community present.

Aftercare
A maintenance regime written to let the landscape change rather than freeze it.
Outcome
A space used from dawn until dusk, by more ages than it was designed for.
